The Southern Cross 31... is an ocean-going dream machine designed for offshore cruising. She is a powerful world cruiser from the board of Thomas Gillmer, designer of the first fiberglass boat to sail around the world. Built by one of New England's most experienced molders of fiberglass yachts. The Southern Cross 31 might best be described as a double-ended ocean cruising cutter of moderate beam, moderate draft, moderate-to-heavy displacement, and moderate sail area. She has a pronounced concave sheer, moderately cut away forefoot, and outboard rudder. To many she would embody the ideal ocean cruising hull form.
With her Yanmar 3GM30F Marine Diesel Engine to push just short of seven tons, this particular Southern Cross 31 is very adequately powered. The fuel capacity of 34 gallons will probably give about 65 hours of powering at five knots, for a range of about 325 miles under power. One of the very best... wind vane type steering systems is made by Cape Horn and this yacht is already equiped with a Cape Horn unit. From my personal inspection I could see that the rigging all appeared to be sound and the sails to be in very good condition. I noticed some scuff marks on the hull forward on the port side which appear to be anchor marks but looks like only cosmetic damage and easily repaired. A four man life raft is included in the sale as well as a dinghy with motor. The outboard motor appears to be nearly brand new. Her Yanmar diesel marine engine is barely broke in at 1,300 hours. Her engine is practically new and the yacht carries plenty of spare parts. of course being a Yanmar marine diesel engine helps with parts and service available throughout the world.
