Exciting History of Bootlicker ~ Now yacht "Odyssey"
|
Bootlicker was launched in April of 1975 at Lymington, Hampshire, United Kingdom. She was the successor to the builder's ~ Jeremy Rogers ~ own "Gumboots", the One Ton World Champion of 1974. Gumboots had been named by the builder's children to beat Gambari and Bootlicker had been named to beat Bootlegger. In May of 1975 she came in 3rd in her class at the Seine Bay Race. In August of the same year she was 1st in her class in the Cervantes Trophy race. During Cowes Week of 1975 she was 4th in Class 2 on one occasion and 3rd in Class 2 on another. She really shone during the Fastnet Race of September, 1975 and came in 13th in class III. In September of 1975 she was surveyed by Lloyds of London and purchased by JH Whitehead, who was her owner, skipper and navigator until January of 1981.
On the 19th of September of 1975 she was loaded aboard the steamer Oranje and arrived in Cape Town in October. In October she raced to Hout Bay, won the Club Trophy and the Windsong Trophy. During November and December she prepared for the Cape Town to Rio Race where she was one of 128 starters. She came in 4th overall and third in her class and then sailed back to Cape Town!
Sailing out of Cape Town she amassed an impressive prize list. Presidents Cup. Commodores Prize. Ohlsson's Cup. Burradoo Trophy (Saldanah and return). Nosworth Cup. Barker Cup. Club Trophy. Windsong Trophy. JH Whitehead Trophy. Agulhas Race. In 1977 she again won the Presidents Cup, the Windsong Trophy and the JH Whitehead Trophy. In 1978 she won the Agulhas Race Club Trophy, the Cape Town Festival Cup, the Commodores Prize and the WC O'Reilly Cup. November of 1978 was spent preparing for the Cape Town to Uruguay Race in 1979 covering 4,500 nautical miles and coming in 7th overall. She cruised to Cape Town via the Magellan Straights and Tierra del Fuego. On April 13 of 1979 which was Good Friday, she rounded famous Cape Horn and passed a week in the Falkland Islands before returning in tremendous seas to Cape Town. This constituted a voyage of 12,000 miles and she arrived back in Cape Town on May 24th of 1979. She then went on to win several more honors. Overall winner of the Agulhas Race and on handicap as well. Winner of the Karl Reikson Memorial Trophy and the JH Saloman Trophy. Winner of the S. Solomon Cup Race. In 1980 she was the winner of the Paraffin Cup Race. She won the Burradoo Trophy, the Friendship Cup and the JH Whitehead Trophy. In December of 1980 Bootlicker was sold to Willem Gabriel Fournie.
