A little Marinette Marine Corporation history... Marinette Marine Corporation (MMC) was founded on the Menominee River in Marinette Wisconsin in 1942 as part of the growth in the American shipbuilding industry during World War II. In 2000 Marinette Marine, which at the time was a privately held company, was purchased by The Manitowoc Company for approximately $48 million. On August 4, 2008 The Manitowoc Company announced that it had signed an agreement to sell their Manitowoc Marine Group division, which included Marinette Marine, to Fincantieri Marine Group Holdings, Inc. and minority investor Lockheed Martin. The sale was completed on Jan 1, 2009 to Fincantieri. The net purchase price in the all-cash deal was approximately $120 million. Since its founding, Marinette Marine has produced more than 1,300 vessels. While primarily a producer of commercial vessels, it has also taken a number of contracts for the United States Navy, primarily for auxiliary vessels. Most recently however, Marinette Marine became part of a team with Lockheed Martin to produce one of two Littoral Combat Ship designs for the Navy, resulting in the launch of the USS Freedom on 23 September 2006.

Almost everyone... who has ever watched a war movie have seen LCMs in action. With their huge bow ramps that drop to allow men and equipment they carry to "hit the beach" in an amphibious assault, they are the link between the beach and the large transport ships that sit offshore. Called boats instead of ships because of their size and affectionately referred to as "Mike" boats by those who love them, the Landing Craft, Mechanized (LCM) plays a vital role in the Navy's amphibious assault mission. Exports to Haiti could top US$1 billion... While a large part of the DR's trade with Haiti takes place in the bi-national markets without controls or statistical records, the official figures from 2008 show that trade was worth US$569 million. For 2009, Dominican exports to Haiti were estimated at nearly US$700 million, but if unregistered exports were to be added to that figure, the total would be closer to a billion dollars.
However, a study commissioned... by the Center for Exports and Investments (CEI-RD) indicated that many problems needed to be resolved before trade could reach its full potential. The study, called "Frontier Trade between the Dominican Republic and Haiti: A proposal for the formalizing and humanizing of the bi-national markets", pointed out many of the main problems. It also identified the 12 points along the frontier where bi-national market days take place.
The problems that impede... better operation of the markets are found on both sides of the frontier. They include a dispute between Dominican and Haitian freight haulers for the control of haulage from the frontier to the final destination in Haiti, a need to define prices for the articles that are traded, the lack of security on both sides of the border, the lack of commercial regulations in the Haitian customs offices which often leads to varying tariffs, no logistics system for any of the markets, the sorry state of transport infrastructure due to the poor roads in Haiti, poorly packaged and presented products, political and social unrest in Haiti, high costs of stevedores and freight in Haiti, and high costs of freight costs in the Dominican Republic.
In response to this long list... of problems, CEI-RD recommends the creation of a physical infrastructure to house the markets on both sides of the border and develop lodging at the principal centers or frontier marketplaces. Finally, they recommend road improvements leading to the market towns.

Let your imagination run wild... The Haitian market has always been a lucrative market for the Dominican Republic. Building materials have been high on the list of exports to Haiti and now with the recent earthquake and current situation this trade has to sky rocket in my humble opinion. Hauling materials by boat is a great solution if you have the right boat. This cargo ship that we have presented here is ideal for the job. The timing is right as well.
There are many small boats... hauling building materials and produce to the Turks and Caicos Islands from here in the Dominican Republic. It is lucrative enough for small operators with small boats so imagine the possiblities with this cargo ship. These are simply my ideas but some of you younger entrepreneurs will have many ideas of your own. This ship is in operation now and her owner is ready to sell her outright or willing to look at other solid business arrangements. In short he has an open mind and there is money to be made in this Country with a ship like this. Let your imagination run wild...
